Chapter 46 Summary

Castle tells Juliette that they are in Omega Point and that they are “the only hope [their] civilization has left” (306). He explains to her that in fact, everything is not nearly as bad as The Reestablishment wants people to believe: there’s enough food to feed everyone, animals still exist—they are just raised on hidden pastures so no one would see them—and crops can still grow if people don’t spray chemicals on them.

Castle tells Juliette that The Reestablishment lies to people to instill fear in them because fear makes them “weak, vulnerable, malleable” (307). Although Juliette acknowledges that Castle is a talented orator, she is reluctant to believe him. He explains to her that their movement is proof that he is telling the truth. They have found the fields and animals that The Reestablishment tried to hide, and they’ve also understood how they keep the society under control and crippled by fear.

Castle then takes Juliette to what she assumes is the medical wing Kenji had mentioned. In one of the rooms Juliette sees Adam, he is sleeping and looks much better than the day before. Castle explains that Adam had many injuries, including broken ribs, and that he “lost more blood than most hospitals would be able to replenish” (309).
